STATEMENT OF NCD CHAIRMAN ON SUBMISSION OF REPORTS

STATEMENT BY NCD CHAIRMAN ON THE SUBMISSION OF THE 2013 AND 2014 REPORTS AND GOOD GOVERNANCE MAGAZINE OF NCD TO HIS EXCELLENCY DR. ERNEST BAI KOROMA AT STATE HOUSE ON MONDAY, AUGUST 10, 2015

Your Excellency, it is always a great moment to stand in your presence and not the least as Chairman of the National Commission for Democracy (NCD), a position that you appointed me to some five years ago. In this regard, I can state categorically that I have executed the duties of my office with due diligence amidst dwindling funding whilst understanding the competing demands on the national budget. Without losing sight of the purpose of this visit, it is only fitting that I comment on the current situation as the nation reels back from the dreadful scourge of Ebola that has impacted every sector including the political economy of the nation.

However, as the head of one of the leading good governance institutions in the Country, I can’t help but observe that your leadership has provided enough direction to lead the nation out of its darkest chapter in its fifty four (54) years as an independent nation. It is the fervent wish of my Commission that your leadership will continue to show the way in the development of our beloved nation even as you have set out the Post-Ebola Recovery Priorities for the nation that will ensure as a people we continue with the Agenda for Prosperity and getting the nation to becoming a middle income economy and overturning the burden of overdependence on donor support.

Your Excellency, as my Commission continues to work on its mandate in the promotion of democratic good governance through its civic education drive in ensuring the interface between government and the people as responsible citizens understanding the implications of the social contract, NCD will continue its traditional role as the participation of the people is assured in the governance of the State. My Commission will continue to shine a light on the activities of government for all the good reasons as effective political communication is pivotal to the people understanding the workings of government, the way to go in the proper governance of the State.

Your Excellency, amidst the crisis, the democratic credential of the nation is still soaring with accolade from President Barack Obama and NCD will continue to play its part in the realization of the democratic aspirations of the nation of Sierra Leone. It is clear that after the crisis, in the not-too-distant future, the nation will do better as the full complement of our democracy is enhanced.

Your Excellency, as a Commission, our role in the Agenda for Prosperity has not been forgotten and with the continued support of government, it is our avowed responsibility “to champion the re-introduction of civic education to schools and the young and disseminate messages of peace and national unity”. My Commission continues to appeal for the much needed support to fulfil these goals as they are integral to the successful outcome of the Agenda for Prosperity.

Your Excellency, my Commission continues its relentless effort in its contributions to the democratic landscape and with four regional offices and headquarters at Youyi Building such contributions will continue to appreciate in value as we work in collaboration with state and non-state actors across the length and breadth of the nation.

Your Excellency, at this juncture, it is my honor and pleasure on behalf of NCD to present these reports for 2013 and 2014 and the first ever “Good Governance Magazine of NCD. In these reports and magazine, NCD has catalogued its activities in the promotion of democratic good governance and its pivotal role in providing civic education to the general masses. With NCD now twenty one (21), we look forward to doing more for the nation with the unflinching support of all.

Thanks for the opportunity and may the good Lord bless you and the nation of Sierra Leone.
